“Today I took my turn at our little window, and everything I saw was blurry through tears. I had such a yearning to be out there…Every little thing I was eating up with my eyes so I lost track of time.” (229) While in jail Mate changes considerably. She begins to grow stronger as an individual while at the same time she’s also breaking down. She remembers all that she once had, like her kids, and she misses them. While in jail she also gets use to things that she would otherwise have thought was beneath the Maribal name.
