Chapter 4

According to this chapter, how is religion a positive force? How is it also possibly a negative force in the Dominican Republic?

  1. "But I couldn't reason with reason herself. I tried a different tack. It's a dirty business,you're right. That's why we women shouldn't get involved."(p.51)

This quote seem interesting how Patria thought that women can make a difference at all but Minerva thought the complete opposite and told her that we are in different times which I agree with Minerva.

According to the novel, religion is a negative force in Dominican because it just lies to you. As Minerva has prove that church is just a lie the priest doesn't do communion like before he just is doing now for money. The way that religion is force positively by finding who you are like Patria.

  2. “I had heard, but I had not believed. Snug in my heart, fondling my pearl, I had ignored their cries of desolation. How could our loving, all-powerful Father allow us to suffer so? I looked up, challenging Him. And the faces had merged!” (53)
This quote reminds me of Minerva and her sudden realization that Trujillo wasn’t who she thought he was, just as religion wasn’t all that she thought it was. I think it shows how both organized religion and politics have the potential to give one person/ group of people a lot of power. There are times, like with Trujillo that a person will abuse that power but people, like Patria, will ignore it. It’s safer to pretend that nothing is wrong than admitting that something is in fact very wrong and that makes it all that harder for Patria when she’s forces to see her own lies (to herself) come crashing down around her.
According to this chapter religion is a good thing because it gives people something to believe in. However, it is also a negative thing because it's used by the Trujillo to control the people. Like when he buys the nuns lots of things they need for the convent in exchange for Lina graduating early so he can keep her as a girl-friend.

"dont play with the word of GOd" (pg 47)
this quote was significant because Patricia is view as really religious but it is also made me think that Patricia is more into religion instead of been like any other girl.

I agree with virginia about how in Dominican religion is just lies. this chapter had to do a lot with religion and it made me think that patricia wants to be a women of religion

  4. "I didn't know,” she said again. What she meant was that she didn’t understand until that moment that they were really living –as Minerva liked to say –in a police state.”(75)
I chose this quote because it reminded me of the quote I chose for chapter 4 for Patria and the quote I chose for Chapter 2 for Minerva. I think that it’s interesting that all three girls so far have had really similar situations in which they first believe in the regime and then an event happens that shakes them so much they realize that they never really believed in Trujillo. All of them have their eyes opened the same way and once they do they’re never the same.
My question is does this mean that Dede will want to actively rise up against the regime like Minerva, or will she pretend everything is all right for a while more like Patria did?

  5. (Pg 54)Let us put the medal in ourselves, Dona Patria said.

I believe this is a positive religion because Patria wanted to help the baby put the medallion inside as she bowed her head in prayer.
