Chapter 3

Maria Teresa' chapter: Why do you think that Alvarez chose to narrate Maria Teresa's chapters using the format of a diary? How does this affect the way that we perceive her as a reader?

  1. Quote: "I asked Minerva why she was doing such a dangerous thing. And then, she said the strangest thing. She wanted me to grow up in a free country."(p.39)

I thought this quote is significant because its weird how Maria Teresa is clueless of how she thinks she is free but she really isn't. Also it was nice how Minerva wants to be an activist and change the country.

  2. Quote: "I'm going to spend the summer learning things I really want to learn! like doing embroidery from Patria, keeping books from Dede, cooking cakes from my Tia Flor, spells from Fela, and how to argue so I'm right, and anything else Minerva wants to teach me.(Pg 42)

I find this quote significant because learning things from other people helps you get better at it, sure it takes a few tries but if you can't get it right, don't get it right, don't give up. Keep trying.
